This March, we proudly celebrated National Arts in Our Schools Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the transformative power of the arts in education and honoring the incredible educators, administrators, and advocates who make it all possible.

This year’s celebration carried special significance for Maryland as Governor Wes Moore officially proclaimed March 2025 as Arts in Our Schools Month in the State of Maryland. We are grateful to the Governor’s Office, Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller, and Secretary of State Susan C. Lee for issuing this meaningful proclamation, which elevates the importance of arts education in our public schools.

We implore citizens to remember that Arts in Our Schools Month isn’t just a celebration but a call to action. The arts are vital to a well-rounded education. They ignite creativity, promote emotional well-being, support academic achievement, and prepare students to think critically and solve problems. Through music, theater, dance, media arts, and visual art, each discipline plays a role in developing the whole child.

The Governor’s proclamation recognizes that:

  • Arts education is a required component of a complete education under the Every Student Succeeds Act.

  • Policies and practices must continue to evolve to ensure equitable access to arts learning for all students.

  • Maryland will continue working to expand arts access as part of its commitment to delivering a world-class education.

This proclamation reinforces what we’ve always known. The arts are not optional. They are foundational. As we look ahead, we remain committed to advocating for strong, well-funded arts programs in every Maryland school.
