The 21st Century Learning Institute is a comprehensive, hands-on, professional development program in which K-8 teachers attend a five-day summer workshop where dance, music, theatre, visual arts, and creative writing are examined as distinct disciplines and used as a means to access other content areas through arts integration. Particular focus is given to the Partnership for 21st Century Skills framework for learning, which is based on the essential skills that our children need to succeed as citizens and workers in the 21st century. Teams of teaching artists, Anne Arundel County and other Maryland school system educators, and international teachers create lesson plans and an arts integrated unit. In the case of the Teaching Artist, they develop a residency. All teams of participants work with Master Teaching Artists in each of the disciplines and are provided with strategies for arts integration.
