| SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN ARTS EDUCATION (THE STATE OF MARYLAND) |
Maryland The Arts Education in Maryland Schools Alliance in conjunction with the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network is pleased to provide the John F. Kennedy for the Performing Arts School of Excellence Award nomination materials for the 2008-2009 School Year. Both the Maryland State and national level awards are designed to recognize and honor individual public schools for their excellent arts education programs and for outstanding accomplishments in making the arts an essential part of education in their district. The awards program provides an opportunity to illustrate students' and schools' success stories, to celebrate America's rich and diverse cultures, and to garner local, state and national media coverage for Schools of Excellence and National Schools of Distinction winners.
Attachment I "State Nomination Packet" includes: "Guidelines for Nomination", "Maryland State Nomination Form", "Nomination Checklist", "Description of Outstanding Arts Program Nomination Questions", and "The Kennedy Center Video Consent and Release" form. Options for completing eligibility requirements for consideration of nomination for the National School of Distinction Award are included with the state form. Attachment II provides a sample of the state nomination submission of one of four Maryland schools that have been awarded national recognition in the last two years. The Kennedy Center press release for 2007- 2008 winners is also attached. (Three of the five 2007- 08 national winners were Maryland schools!) The AEMS Alliance invites multiple nominations and intends to build support for high-quality, systemic arts education for all Maryland schoolchildren by recognizing eligible individual schools that provide an arts rich learning environment for students.
Please return the required nomination documents by the postmarked deadline of February1, 2009.

| Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Arts Integration |
The Maryland Higher Education Commission has approved Maryland’s first Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Arts Integration (PBC-AI), a unique in service certification for teachers interested in arts integration created by the AEMS Alliance Higher Education in the Arts Task (HEAT) Force.
Designed for educators who wish to expand their capacity to use arts integration as a strategy for enabling their students to learn in and through the arts, the PBC-AI is an interdisciplinary approach to education incorporating a variety of art disciplines including dance, music, theatre and the visual arts.
A multi-institutional graduate credential—awarded by Towson University with the participation of University of Maryland, College Park; University of Maryland, Baltimore County; and Johns Hopkins University—the PBC-AI is designed for flexible delivery, with some courses to be taught on-site in local school districts.
Please review the following brochure for more information on this exciting new program.
